My Shop

My shop is a building that is built inside of my barn.  It is 24' X 30' with an 8' ceiling.  I have storage above my shop which is where my dust collector is.  My air compressor also sits outside of my shop in the barn.  I heat my shop with a wood stove with a furnace to back it up.  I store my wood and plywood's in the barn.  I bring the wood that I need for a project into the shop two weeks before I start milling to let it acclimate to the shop.  Take a look at my pictures of my tools and other neat stuff in my shop.

Below are three pictures of my workbench that I made out of hard maple.  The bench is 26" wide by 86" long.  I installed an end vise and a side vise.  I left the front legs and front stretcher flush with the top with 3/4" holes drilled in them to enable me to hold longer and wider boards using the side vise for stabilization.  The top of my bench is 35" high which allows me work without bending.  I finished the bench with equal parts of Boiled linseed oil, mineral spirits and polyurethane.

Here is my pride and joy.  Craftsman 221240 10" cabinet saw.  If I only could only have one tool this would be it.  I made the router extension on the right hand side of the saw.

This is a router fence that I made out of an old kitchen table leaf.  I made replaceable inserts so I could have zero clearnce for my different router bits.  I also made a channel along the back of the fence so I could hook up my dust collector.

This is my assembly and finishing table which I made out of an old drafting table.  The drawers went the full length of the bench so I cut them in half and added new backs to them.  In the bottom right corner where the prints were rolled up and stored I made drawers to fit in there.  The top is made up of hardboard glued to 1 1/2" thick particle board.

Here is my all-round workbench.  I use this for small mechanical repairs and for setting up my sharping system for sharping chisels, plane irons and so on.

Here is a picture of my good old Dewalt 500270 10" radial arm saw that I bought for $50.00.  I would have never have bought one if I did not find this one for such a good price.  I have had it now for about six years and I use it all the time.

Here is my Delta 34-080 10" chop saw. I made the stand for this saw about 15 years ago and I have moved it numerous times until I finally found a place where it works out great in my shop.  I think!

Here is my Delta P20 20" scroll saw and my Delta/Rockwell sander grinder.  They work good next to each other because I like to grind a point on my scroll saw blades allowing me to make smaller entrance holes into the pieces that I am doing fret work on.

Here is my Delta  14-651 hollow chisel mortiser.  What a handy tool!  It is sitting on top of a tool box which I store most of my woodworking hand tools.

This is my Delta 22-580 13" planer.  Notice the sled that I installed so that I can plane wood down to 1/4" comfortably.

This is my most recent tool to be added to my collection, a Delta 31-255X 18"-36" drum sander.  Just like everything else, you wonder how you got along without it once you have it.

By now you are probably wondering if ever buy any stationary tools other than Delta.  Well here is my Jet JWBS 18" bandsaw.  What a wonderful tool for re-sawing!  I have not found anything yet that I wanted to do that I could not do with this saw.

This is my good old Chicago DP558-2 5 speed drill press.  I have owned this since the mid seventies and it is still working great!  I made the drill press table with replaceable inserts where the drill is centered.  The clamps are made out of white oak that I salvaged from an old pallet.

This is my Grizzly G1018 8" jointer.  What a work horse.  I am considering to replace the jointer head from jointer knives to the carbide tip cutters.  I have to think about this for awhile.

This is another machine that I use all the time.  A Grizzly G1071 oscillating spindle sander.  Before I had this I made a jig up so I could use my drill press for spindle sanding.  This sure does a much better job.

Here is my Grizzly G1531 6" X 80" edge sander.  I do not use this all that much but when I do there is no other tool to match it.

This is a downdraft table that I built sitting on top of a cabinet that I also built.  The vent hood above the table is an old vent hood that we replaced in our kitchen.  It sure does help with the dust.

The following two pictures are how I store my plywood.  I was having trouble with somewhere to store all of the cut off pieces so I came up with this cart.

Now this piece of equipment which we will refer to as a wood stove is for the projects that just do not turn out right!  This little stove heats up my workshop just fine.
